Rescuing Dogs in Zagreb, Croatia

Dear Animal Friends

This is a call the AFC Network Against Animal Abandoning is sending out in order to rescue the remaining dogs of the rescue center Spirit in Zagreb, Croatia.

The situation is very serious! For many years Spirit without hesitation rescued dogs from Croatia's streets, but now the veterinary inspection ordered the closure of this compound and the inevitable eviction is February 13, 2011. The reason for this is that Spirit does not satisfy legal conditions for an animal shelter and is located within a residential area. However, it has to be mentioned that in the beginning the shelter was alone in that area and the residential area developed around it during the years.

Some 150 dogs are now in danger but we are hoping that the number will be
quickly reduced.

As head of the project Network Against Animal Abandoning it is of course of greatest importance for us to avoid the forced euthanasia, which is the threat right now. This is why we are sending out the alert.

Please help, if you can, in any possible way to save the lives of these dogs, by finding them a home or place to be, may it be in another shelter or even at a friend's or relative's loving home. There is no more grateful dog than a rescued one - s/he never forgets!

You may wonder why other Croatian shelters do not take in some of the dogs?
We have many other dog shelters in and around Zagreb, all over Croatia, who do a lot, rescue and re-home numerous dogs and cats every year. But unfortunately also they are at the limit of their allowed capacities and cannot take in dogs from Spirit.

This is the contact to the SPA "Spirit":

Plus the Austrian volunteers from Dogs Voice, here you can speak to Edith Illmaier who engages a lot for the dog shelter Spirit:

Please do not hesitate to contact Edith or Monika directly and offer help to rescue any of the dogs, if you have the possibility do to so. Their days are counted.
Thank you so much!
