Investigation into Abuses of Australian Animals

From: http://www.liveexport-indefensible.com/

Animals Australia's latest investigation documents terrible abuses of Australian animals...

A further investigation by Animals Australia in Egypt has documented terrible abuses of Australian sheep and horrendous acts of cruelty to Australian and other animals.

Despite this, and this treatment completely contravening a new agreement with Egypt, purported by the Howard government to protect the welfare of animals -- Minister McGauran has announced that the government will continue permit exports to Egypt.

Our investigators filmed while Australian sheep were trussed with wire, thrown onto their backs in car boots, and tied onto car roof racks. Investigators also filmed the horrendous slaughter of Australian sheep; animals having their throats cut -- often badly -- whilst fully conscious, resulting in prolonged, painful, and frightening deaths. As well as showing the terrible, cruel treatment of Australian animals, our footage also documented blatant and total disregard of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was recently negotiated by the Australian and Egyptian governments and touted to the Australian public as heralding improvements in animal welfare in Egypt.

The Government's decision to ignore Egypt's disregard for the agreement has outraged leading international animal protection groups the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) and national bodies Animals Australia and RSPCA Australia -- who have voiced a united condemnation of the government's decision.

In an unprecedented move, the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) has backed the groups call for the Howard government to immediately halt live exports to Egypt citing the completely unacceptable handling, transport and slaughter practices documented by Animals Australia investigators.
