Animal Rights Actions in Bulgaria

February 2009

My name is Ana Stefanova. I’m from Bulgaria.

I’m writing to you, because here a lot of disturbing things happen about the homeless dogs. In the centers for castration the conditions are bed. The two-week period that the dogs must spend there before euthanasia is not considered –they kill the dogs immediately. Today, 21. 02. 2009 on the TV report of the national television (BTV), a news report shows a woman, that recommends that the homeless dogs must be killed with soda-caustic in mince. This was the advice to the others, who are afraid of the dogs. The report shows how people buy different products from the shops- gas-pistols etc. for protection.

Last year a dog in front of our block was killed with a gun, directly in the head. My neighbors and I wrote a petition to the police, we received a decision from the prosecutor’s office that this is not a crime.

Every effort that the people who love and cares for the animals are completely useless, the police, the municipality and every institution accept this as not serious and funny.

This is very discouraging and cruel, so I write now because the people here want to stop this, but don’t know who to ask and what to do.

News from the Future for Animals Foundation

We are a no-kill animal sanctuary located in Bulgaria. In our country, because of a lack of resources and negative attitudes towards animals, our four-legged friends often do not receive the humane treatment they deserve. We are looking for sponsors to help us improve the lives of dogs and cats in Bulgaria. We catch animals, spay/neuter them, provide medical attention, and provide a home for homeless dogs and cats. Additionally, our staff provides special attention for animals who are old or sick.
