ROME, Nov.14 (Xinhua) -- Jacques Diouf, the U.N. Food and
Agriculture Organization director-general, Friday launched a 24-hour hunger
strike ahead of the World Summit on Food Security to call for an end to hunger.
Diouf urged "people of goodwill everywhere" to join him in a global hunger
strike this weekend, calling for solidarity with the world's one billion chronic
malnutrition victims.
"I hope that through these gestures we will raise
awareness, and build pressure on public opinion to ensure that those who can
change this situation are able to do so," Diouf said.
"We have the
technical means and the resources to eradicate hunger from the world so it is
now a matter of political will, and political will is influenced by public
opinion," Diouf said.
Diouf said he hopes the strike may help reduce the
number of people around the world suffering from hunger, especially children. He
said a person dies every six seconds from hunger or related diseases.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced that he would join the strike on
Sunday, one day ahead of the start of the World Summit on Food Security.
The summit would commit the international community to eradicating hunger and
achieving the right to adequate food for all, according to FAO.
