Bingle's Diary #13 - Children visited Boeun Shelter

Boeun Primary School students visited Boeun Shelter for study on 11 April.

When Sunnan established Boeun Shelter on 15 April 2007, she had two purposes. One was using the shelter as a educating center for raising awareness of students on loving animals and loving lives, and the other was to provide comfortable place to animals because she felt painful that Daegu Shelter was too small for animals to live comfortably. So, she wanted to make abandoned animals live more happily in spacious area.

Sunnan planned educating schedule on loving animals since one year ago, but she could not find opportunity to carry out the educating because she was constantly confronted with many things. On 11 April 2009, 27 primary school students, 1 kindergartener, and 3 leading teachers from Boeun Church in Boeun Town visited Boeun Shelter for studying animals, and educating on loving animals was started.

Then, I (Bingle) was proudly selected first (with my longest experience in getting along with volunteers) among dogs who could play with young students, and then Golden Retriever "Daekyon" and "Kanghee" (although admitted in March 2009, Kanghee is meeker than Daekyon and was expected to take good care of children), so three of us were selected.

There were other friends too, but three of us were selected who would get along completely well with young students as it was the first day of raising awareness of children on loving animals. In fact, it was very hard to play with children today, and it put us under a little stress, but we endured to carry out our duty well and enjoyed playing with children. Daekyon and Kanghee also played with the students well without losing smiles.

Many adults in our country either dislike animals or despise them. Consequently, innocent children fear and dislike animals without any reason and even scare them away or throw stones at them. Children and animals are genuine and innocent that they can easily get along well. Real character of these young children was shown in this Boeun Shelter. They played to the full with animals with whom they wanted to play without getting restriction from anybody.

I think we have to let them show their good-hearted and beautiful character by making many opportunities such as this. Following photograph shows 28 children playing happily with me, Daekyon, Kanghee and other friends. Please look at them.

Getting off three separate vehicles around 1030 hours, children are gathering toward the fence in curiosity watching big dogs inside the fence.

"“Ah, ah!"shouting constantly, they are running around to look at dogs this side and that.

“Well, come here everybody. Let’s take a souvenir photograph.” When called by leading teacher, children gathered right away and took this photograph upon their arrival. I, Bingle, thought I would not be popular among them as my body was small, but they leaped at me as soon as they saw me and took me in their arms like this. (three schoolboys in the center)

Oh… it was rather uncomfortable in their arms, so I jumped down and rushed to Sunnan.

But, I was surrounded by children soon.

Daekyon and a schoolboy seem to run a race. These two ran up to the roadside and are coming back.

Look at Yoon Chan Mi who is youngest kindergartener among 28 students is touching my hips. Upon arrival, she kept on running away screaming and crying in fear along with Heo Ji Son, third grade in primary school. However, she seems to like me as she is already caressing me looking at elder schoolgirls and schoolboys.

I was following Sunnan, and kids were following me all together. It was interesting and I was so proud of myself. Saying, “Catch me if you can.” The kid wearing yellow T-shirts and running beside Yoon Chan Mi is Heo Ji Son in the third year in primary school. At first, she was afraid of us like Chan Mi but was changed and now she is following me to hold me in her arms. Kids following in the back are singing together. Singing, “Bingle, Bingle, Ah~~~”

Kids still following me well.

A second year student gently walking with Daekyon. Volunteer Kim Kwi Ran is watching children and dogs from a distance. Of course, leading teachers are watching too.

Oh, finally I was held in a tall schoolgirl’s arms and lifted up and down. Kids were so excited that they raised a battle cry though I didn’t know what made them so happy.

I didn’t know when schoolboys appeared, but they joined too. The schoolboy, who has been enjoying walking with Daekyon only, now looks worried that Daekyon may be taken away.

Our friends barking at many strangers. Some children hid their ears while others don’t care and are just happy to see my friends on second floor.

Students caressing Daekyon on rooftop play area.

Gentle and good Daekyon and Kanghee are as happy as children. Kanghee still smiling although someone is sitting on the back as shown in following photograph.

Every child is eager to take me in their arms maybe because my body is small.

Frankly speaking, at first I was afraid that students would harass me as they were still immature young students. But, they didn’t. I was very grateful because they tried not to make me uncomfortable in their own way.

While I was in two students’ arms I saw Kanghee looking at me enviously. “If body is small, you can get luxury treatment. Sorry,” said I.

It was when a teacher on the left was caressing Yoon Chan Mi, the youngest kindergarten student wearing pink dress. Saying, “See? You don’t need to be afraid of it.”

Rooftop play area is divided into four parts. Inmost, second and third spaces are all play areas for cats. Fourth play area at the entrance to rooftop is the largest. It is for dogs. You can see cats and children playing together on the first play area.

Look at this. Won’t I get ill from fatigue? But, what can I do since kids love me like this. “Well, do as you please.”

We are preparing for watching photographs in audio/visual training room.

Kanghee looks happy surrounded by kids. Kanghee looks really satisfied at tender hands from everywhere.

Third and fourth year students answering questionnaires prepared by KAPS.

These kids don’t eat gimbap prepared as their lunch, and is giving them to us. Kanghee is eating very well when they threw gimbap before her. Daekyon and I made a lot of mistakes in catching gimbap by jumping up.

I and Kanghee played around with the kids.

This is play area for big dogs, Sink, Chongdong and Boyoung. Kids who are afraid of big dogs don’t enter but just watching them from the outside. Chongdong, Sink and Boyoung seem to like kids. They look happy, don’t they?

Kicking a ball now.

There are schoolboys who can’t come in although they envy schoolgirls and big dogs playing together inside.

Please look at these small schoolgirls playing with Sink, Chongdong and Boyoung not afraid at all. Well, aren’t there more schoolgirls than schoolboys?

This is play area for Jindo dog, Kilnam and Dongkok.

This is rooftop cats’ play area. However, all cats except Jingjing got into the room. Different from dogs, cats are timid and sensitive. But, they easily become friendly if they meet someone few times. In my case, cats were glad to see me when they saw me for the second time.

Chan Mi on the right, youngest kindergartener, has a fear of all dogs and cats, but she is trying to touch a cat like elder students. She was really cute. At last, she bragged that she could touch all dogs and cats.

This is a warm cats’ room. Kumbi, Jingjing and Dalsoon are playing with kids.

Kids are trying to give some food to Samsoon who was a little afraid to come down from stairs.

Schoolboys gave up because of sore arms, but one schoolgirl keeps on asking, “Taste, taste.”

Finally succeeded in making the cat eat. Maybe because she continuously held the food even if her arms were painful. “Attagirl.”

They are feeding food to cats including Byolee and Darong.

“Oh, Daekyon is such a broad and cushiony pillow.”

Schoolgirls are gathering beside Daekyon saying, “me too, me too.” Heo Ji Son wearing yellow T-shirts on the left who is in the third year in primary school screamed and ran away in fear of dogs, but now she likes Daekyon very much.

They are looking at our photographs in audio/visual training room taken with students who enjoyed playing with us. They are involved in watching screen to see if they can find their own faces.
