TOMS RIVER -- Quoting Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Jane Goodall,
animal rights activists told Ocean County freeholders they are opposed
the extermination of Canada geese at county parks.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been capturing and killing
hundreds of Canada geese using lethal gas in Ocean County. The policy,
effect since 2008, comes after a decade of nonlethal control
failed to stem the waterfowl population.
Between March and October, the county will pay the federal government
$22,317 for the service.
Almost a dozen people, mostly from towns outside of Ocean County, rose
to the public microphone to complain during last week�s freeholder
