From S.A.N.E.

Changing
your own life style is an important first step toward eliminating
animal suffering. But in order to achieve sweeping changes in the
ways animals are treated in our society, we must also convince other
people to eliminate animal exploitation from their lives. By becoming
an activist, You are helping to strengthen a powerful grass-roots
political movement to Win rights for animals.
Becoming
an activist can mean many things: Writing letters, making phone
calls, participating in peaceful demonstrations, and educating others
about animal exploitation are just a few of the many ways you can
help make the world a better place for animals. Be sure to visit
our
Activist Resources page for information
on effective activism tactics.
Live
a cruelty Free life
Don't
buy products such as cosmetics and shampoos that test on animals. If
a product doesn't say "Cruelty Free" or "Not tested
on Animals," don't patronize the company by buying products. There
are many well-known products that are and have always been cruelty
free. There are also many guides to such products available
on the internet and in books. One such guide is available at
http://www.hedweb.com/campaig/vegcomp.htm. As
awareness grows, new products become available daily.
Don't
wear or buy products made from leather, wool, fur, or silk. Much
better and kinder alternatives exist. The less we support these
industries financially, the less demand we create and ultimately,
the less suffering we contribute to.
Spay
or Neuter This is one of the most important things you can
do right away. Spaying and neutering helps prevent overpopulation
and ultimate destruction of many beautiful animals. By spaying
or neutering, you are acknowledging your love and responsibility
to an important member of your family. Animals living on the
streets can also benefit from being spayed or neutered. The
Humane Society of El Paso sponsors the Feral Cat Program. Visit
their website to learn more about it.
Report
animal abuse immediately
Most
of us would immediately try to help an abused or neglected child
by reporting such abuse. Animals are even more helpless than
children because they cannot speak for themselves. Please be
a voice for them by reporting animal abuse to the police, sheriff's
department, or the Humane Society.
Go
Vegan!
Medical
evidence shows that humans are not natural carnivores.
(two
great information sources:
http://www.earthsave.bc.ca/materials/articles/articles/pdf/health/anatomy.pdf
and
http://www.vegsource.com/veg_faq/comparative.htm)
However,
most of us grew up eating meat, never knowing what it takes to put
beef or chicken on the table. The average human can consume
eight cows in his or her lifetime. That's a lot of hormones,
pesticides, antibiotics, lethal chemicals like mercury, and bacteria! Not
to mention the artery-clogging animal fats! And don't forget
the fear and suffering that comes with every single fast-food hamburger.
Vegetarians
enjoy a widely varied diet that is just as convenient to live with
as the traditional meat-eating diet. Many ready-made frozen
foods are available in most common grocery stores and thousands
of recipes and cookbooks exist. You can certainly get all the
nutrition you need from plant-based sources, and the health benefits
speak for themselves. Talk to vegetarians. You'll be surprised
to find out that we don't just eat salads! One great source
of information is the
Vegetarian
Society of El Paso. There you will find information on
scheduled luncheons and dinners, as well as how to get your free
vegetarian starter kit. For more vegetarian links, visit our
Lynx page, or check out the information
in our

Start
a local animal rights group or
vegetarian
society or join S.A.N.E We are always in need of new members
who are truly interested in making a difference in the lives of
animals. When you donate your time and talents, your are not
only helping the animals, you are helping to change society by adopting
a "biocentric" ethic that includes humans in the much
greater global community of earth. We exclude ourselves from
this community when we think we are superior to other life forms
and choose to believe animals were put on "our" planet
for our use. Mutual respect for all life allows us to see how
similar we are to other creatures. A compassionate life is
a life free from the prejudice that the tyrants of the big industries
shackle our thinking with. One person makes a lifetime of difference!

Donate
money to your favorite animal or vegetarian group
Most
of these groups are made up of volunteers and are strictly non-profit. Members
donate their time and sometimes their own money for causes and campaigns
to help animals. Some of the sites found on our Lynx page contain
information about donations and joining them. If you can't
join an organization, please support one today!
Take
Direct Action!
"If
we are trespassing, so were the soldiers who broke down the gates
of Hitler's death camps; If we are thieves, so were the members
of the Underground Railroad who freed the slaves of the South; And
if we are vandals, so were those who destroyed forever the gas chambers
of Buchanwald and Auschwitz."
