Ask Your City Mayor to Officially Recognize National Bird Day
With National Bird Day just around the corner, the Animal Protection
Institute (API), in coordination with the Avian Welfare Coalition
(AWC), is calling on activists around the U.S. to take action on behalf
of captive birds, by drawing attention to the exploitation of birds by
the U.S. pet industry.
A few of the facts:
*Nearly 12% of the world's 9,800 bird species may face extinction
within the next century, including nearly one-third of the world's
330 parrot species.
*Many of the world's parrots and songbirds are threatened with
extinction due to pressures from the pet trade and habitat loss.
*Millions of birds are captured from the wild or produced in captivity
only to lead miserable lives languishing in conditions that fail to
meet their instinctive behavioral and physical needs
Help us spread the important message about the plight of captive birds
by asking your city mayor to proclaim January 5, 2007 "National Bird
Day."
How You Can Help:
Contact Your City Mayor:
Step 1: Send the sample proclamation along with a short letter to your
mayor asking him/her to proclaim January 5 "National Bird Day."
*The sample letter is at
www.api4animals.org/downloads/NBD.Proclamation.SL.rtf
*The sample proclamation is at
www.api4animals.org/downloads/NBDProclamation.rtf
Step 2: Send a copy of the signed Proclamation to API to be added to
the list of cities and for your chance to win a free canvas bag from
the Avian Welfare Coalition. (See the bag at
www.cafepress.com/avianwelfare/48304.)
Attend a National Bird Day event:
Many people have already informed us of events they will be holding in
honor of National Bird Day. So if there's an event happening near
you, please make plans to attend and show your support for the birds!
Events will kick off this weekend in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA,
with many other cities around the country to host events in January.
