SAN ANDREAS - Abuse of humans and animals often is intimately linked, with the people who molest children or beat their mates frequently also threatening or torturing the pets that belong to those family members, according to a national expert on family violence and animals who spoke Thursday in San Andreas.

Phil Arkow, head of the American Humane Association's Link Program, presented a four-hour workshop to more than 40 representatives of law enforcement agencies, county government and social service agencies serving Calaveras, Amador and Tuolumne counties.
