Animal-rights groups want prosecutors to halt controversial radiation testing on monkeys at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, saying the research is “unnecessary torture, torment and cruelty” that violates state law.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals yesterday asked Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone’s office to step in, saying Harvard University’s $1.75 million primate experiment will inflict “unnecessary physical and psychological abuse.” The letter calls on Leone to block the federally funded tests or “be positioned to prosecute when the experiments begin.”
