Shocking Evidence of Monkey Suffering in Mauritius
Footage obtained from inside a facility connected to Bioculture, one of
the main monkey supply companies, shows the extremely stressful methods of
capture used. Monkeys, frantic in their attempts to escape, were grabbed and
pulled by their tails to capture them from pens and transfer to small cages
prior to export. Because this species of monkey does not have a prehensile
tail, such handling could result in injury, including the separation of
vertebrae in the tail leading to considerable pain and debilitation.

Wild long-tailed monkeys sustain broken limbs and other injuries when
trappers catch the primates and transfer them to breeding farms on the
island nation of Mauritius. Mauritius justifies the catching of wild monkeys
on the grounds that the long-tailed macaque is not native, is a pest and is
not deserving of conservation concerns.

SAMPLE LETTER:
I
was shocked to learn that thousands of wild-caught primates and their
offspring are exported every year from Mauritius for research. The
investigation by the BUAV into the trade in primates for research has
revealed shocking evidence of the cruelty and suffering involved in the
trapping and breeding of wild monkeys and exposed the terrible plight of
monkeys in Mauritius.
The capture of primates from the wild inflicts
substantial suffering and is inherently cruel. Monkeys frequently sustain
broken limbs and other injuries when trappers attempt to catch them. Their
brutal capture from the wild and forced captivity in Mauritius is morally
unacceptable.
The conditions in which primates are held on breeding
farms fail to meet the many complex behavioural and psychological needs of
these highly intelligent and social animals. Monkeys are highly social and
intelligent animals with strong family ties. The primates are often kept in
small cages, with no companionship and with little mental stimulation. Many
will be used in toxicity tests which involve the forced ingestion,
inhalation or injection of chemicals to the point of causing severe illness
and even death. Others will be used in research which may include
deliberately inflicting brain damage and the implantation of electrodes.
Please take immediate action to end this appalling cruelty and ban the
capture and export of primates !
