Subject: [Njara Alert] NJ Demos Against Ringling Bros Circus
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus brings animal cruelty into our
neighborhood at the Continental Arena, East Rutherford, NJ from March 7,
through March 12, 2007. Ringling claims to bring "adrenaline-pounding
trapeze and the amazing animals in a performance packed full of the latest
in 21st Century technology" There is nothing 21st century about forcing
endangered exotic wild animals to perform tricks they don't understand, are
stressful and painful for them to do and something they would never do in
the wild if it were not for the trainers who use bullhooks
http://circuses.com/bullhooks.asp , whips, and electric prods used on the
most sensitive parts of the animals bodies. Constant fear, trauma,
intimidation, and loneliness is what circus animals endure everyday.
In the wild female Asian elephants stay with their mothers their whole
lives and live in a family environment with aunts, and sisters who love and
care for one another. Instead Ringling elephants have been stripped of all
that is natural to them, separated from their mothers and beaten into
submission to perform tricks. Ringling elephants, tigers, camels, horses,
llamas spend 11 months of the year traveling in train cars through extreme
cold and hot temperatures. Ringling uses a gray powder on the elephants
skin called Wonder Dust to hide and conceal fresh wounds and punctures
caused by the bullhook.
Ringling's own employees have recently reported of routine animal abuse,
elephants living in fear of beatings, horses beaten and whipped and
traveling in filthy, miserable transport conditions.
