Nineteen-year-old Michael Harp remembers enjoying the
circus as a little kid. But recently the Inez mechanic saw a train pulling
circus elephants in caged box cars through Bloomington and felt bad for them.
"I didn't think they would have them like that," he said about the small
traveling space. "It's kind of awkward."
Wild animals should not be a part of the circus, Lisa Weisberg, legal consultant
for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said.
The association, along with The Fund for Animals and the Animal Protection
Institute, will battle Ringling Bros. in federal court in October, citing
violations of the Endangered Species Act.
"They don't want the public to know what really goes on behind the scenes,"
Weisberg said, adding the plaintiffs have "incredible evidence."
