2010 Wins for Animals

THE WINS WON'T STOP...What a year for animals!

First we sent you Kinship Circle's Year-End Updates. Since then, two more big wins have rolled in as 2010 rolls out:

JUST IN: U.S. LAWMAKERS AGREE ON SOMETHING — TO BAN SHARK FINNING!
In a bipartisan victory for animals, both chambers of U.S. Congress passed the Shark Conservation Act, to plug loopholes that allowed finning in Pacific off West Coast waters. A final draft universally bans severing shark fins
(an ingredient in shark fin soup) and tossing live animals back to bleed to death... READ MORE

JUST IN: "TRUTH IN FUR LABELING ACT OF 2010" BECOMES A U.S. LAW

After years of pushing for labels that identify origin on fur, U.S. lawmakers heard us, and enacted the Truth in Fur Labeling Act. Prior law didn't require retailers to name species or country of origin on fur sold for $150 or less (most fur-trimmed items). The issue got mainstream attention when dog/cat hides were found in fake fur... READ MORE

We've made significant strides for animals in 2010
. This holiday season imagine the world you've helped change.

For a moment, put your anger on a shelf. Kiss your dog. Hug your cat. Envision all others without shackles or cages. Remember how privileged you are to know their wonder. How lucky you are to see them.

with my eyes

by Brenda Shoss, Kinship Circle

My prayer tonight is for all who lie down in chains or cages.

Alone and afraid on concrete floors.
Soundless screams behind metal.
Locked in rooms, forever.

I feel their fear arise in my soul. Ancient yet new...
A primal flame burning against the walls of my heart.

I want to scream an endless note, loud and true:

Clubbed. Forgotten.
Dismembered. Forgotten.
Gassed. Forgotten.
Beaten. Forgotten.
Burned. Forgotten.
Electrocuted. Forgotten.
Abandoned. Forgotten.
Poisoned. Forgotten.
Skinned. Forgotten.
Shot. Forgotten.
Caged. Forgotten.
Shackled. Forgotten.
Murdered. Forgotten.

With my eyes, they will be seen.
With my voice, they will be heard.
With my hands, they will know comfort.
With my action, they will be free.

Dear God, fill their oppressors with mercy and empathy.
Dear God, instill compassion where there is apathy.
Replace horror with grace. Bloodshed with healing.

Restore humans and animals to their natural place.
Liberate humans and animals from
greed, violence and hate.

So that tonight and evermore, ALL may lie down to sleep
unchained — uncaged — free
