Contact Mamaroneck Regarding Geese Slaughter

The Village of Mamaroneck has signed a contract with the USDA. They are planning on gathering the geese and killing them this summer. They will do this when they are in their molting stage. This is when they loose their wing feathers and cannot fly. They will also be attacking their nests so the eggs can't hatch. They will be donating the meat to local food banks. They say they are doing this because of the goose droppings that are all over the harbor.

We will be posting an official alert - with notification to the press - for the next meeting of the Mamaroneck Board of Trustees, which will held on:

March 11

Courtroom - Village Hall

The public will be allowed to speak on the proposed geese slaughter at this meeting

We have also requested a private meeting with Mayor Rosenblum and a Trustee.

IN ADDITION:

A few thoughts re the PATCH article today (The reporter has added info re warning labels to the 'poor' who eat the geese flesh):
http://larchmont.patch.com/articles/mamaroneck-geese-on-death-row

- The reporter and I searched for poop (she wanted to take a photo); there was almost none to be found. She then pointed to one - and I pointed out that it could be DOG poop as well, hard to tell. Will MamK announce they're killing dogs? Of course not.

- Mayor Rosenblum states we can ''put the geese in our own yards' if we wish - but we can't do it if he kills them.

- 'If they are given the green light to go ahead, said USDA Spokesperson Tanya Espinosa, "Geese are placed alive in commercial turkey crates, and are taken to a poultry processor, where they are humanely euthanized and processed for human consumption following the guidelines set by New York State Agriculture and Markets, NYSDEC Bureau of Wildlife, and New York State Health Department." - This must always be challenged; the gassing and suffocation of geese and their babies is never humane. These municipalities lie to the public to make themselves look good and make those who support this brutality feel better

- 'Rosenblum said that officers on patrol in the area often have to bring an extra pair of shoes to avoid tracking the goose waste into their homes and cars.' Police in other venues have to deal with far, far worse than this, if its true.

*Note: Several current and former Mamk residents have mentioned the on-going sewer-system problem, which is being downplayed by the Mayor. A few described the smell in the vicinity of the system as being unbearable.

Again, thx to all who put educated, intelligent comments at the bottom of this article

The newest addition to the slaughter-fest for geese in Westchester County is the Village of Mamaroneck. As many of you know, there have been victories in other municipalities here recently that already enacted, or wanted to enact, mass slaughter of their geese residents. After repeated intervention by advocates, Yonkers stated to the media that it is 'highly unlikely' they will do another slaughter; and Scarsdale has stated they are not signing a 'cull' contract with the USDA, but instead will consider many other options that have been presented to them by geese advocates and concerned residents.

It is especially outrageous that Mamaroneck has made this decision for the following reasons:

*They recently purchased a 'RAY VAC' with $30,000 of taxpayer money! This is a larger version of the Nature Sweep cleaning system being used in several venues (www.naturesweep.com) which, rather than disbursing or disturbing the geese, addresses the droppings. It makes absolutely no sense to kill the geese especially in light of this purchase.

*Mamaroneck has had ongoing problems with its sewage system for years, which they admit and was just reported in NY NEWSDAY. Mamaroneck's water supply also contains HUMAN FECAL MATTER - which would not be cured by killing their geese residents. Mamaroneck residents report removing CONDOMS and garbage from boats from the water (there are of course several monied people who keep boats at Mamaroneck pier). Others report seeing used kleenex, discarded hair clips and tanning bottles in the water; its unlikely that the geese were responsible for any of them.

*The slaughter is NEVER 'humane' - the geese and their babies are rounded up when they can't fly, and are gassed while they cry and struggle to breathe.
KILLING THE GEESE IS CRUEL AND POINTLESS; others will come into the area. Mamaroneck Pier is an inviting, open space of grass expanses and access to Long Island Sound - attractive to people and birds...and for many people, the birds are PART of the attraction. At the end of this alert are wonderful quotes from Scarsdale residents pleased that their geese will not be killed. http://scarsdale.dailyvoice.com/news/scarsdale-happy-village-decision-not-kill-geese

As one Scarsdale resident poignantly stated at the Board of Trustees meeting, "Pooping should not be a capital crime!"

FROM THE SCARSDALE DAILY VOICE:

"It's shocking to me that they would have even considered such a drastic measure in the first place," Sargent road resident Mohammad Jamal said. "The geese are as much a part of the community as the rest of us. You can't just get rid of things that are inconvenient to you." "It's good they came to their senses before it was too late," Alli Jones said outside of the Scarsdale train station. "There are so many other options for consideration." Recently retired Scarsdale teacher Stephen Sepe said the geese and pond are an indispensable learning tool for the high school. "The geese are a part of the life of the school," he said. "They would nest there and provide the students direct contact to nature. I would often talk about the geese in my classes, and really felt they were an important vehicle for teaching respect for life. The idea of doing harm to the animals is appalling, and I don't understand that the powers that be would even contemplate such a measure." SOME FACTS ABOUT GEESE: - mate for life and will stay together throughout the year - are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act

Mating season is February - early April, which is when they are most vulnerable and cannot fly.

- Geese return to the area of their birth each year to mate and nest. - They are protective of their babies and nurture them just as people do. - They like to sleep on water to evade predators Some items currently used to avoid killing geese are robotic decoys,

The Goosinator, Geesebusters, and Naturesweep (a tidying
and whisking service)
