WALTHAM -- A local woman with a passion for elephants is asking city
businesses to boycott Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey's Circus playing
at the TD Banknorth Garden.
Waltham resident Elyse Bell has been walking around the city for
weeks, urging business owners not to advertise for the circus in its
windows because, according to Bell its trainers abuse elephants.
"They are chained and beaten. It's torture," said Bell, who has done
extensive research on the treatment of performing elephants. "The
elephants can't tell you. The elephants can't talk."
...
Bell, a cancer survivor, said she became a vegetarian after she read
an article in The Washington Post in 2001 about a slaughterhouse.
She became a vegan in January within 30 seconds of visiting PETA's Web site.
"I can't do it. I think of the calf who got pulled away from its
mother and put in a milk crate," she said. "I don't want to
participate in an animal's suffering."
