When is a vegan too sensitive--not sensitive
enough?
This is a question I've been pondering personally for a long
time. We vegans are often prodded by non-vegans to "just take a joke!" yet
there are situations in which I simply can't blame a vegan for being
offended. In fact, I would be rather angry if a vegan didn't take offense to
their friend putting a hamburger in their face while making a mooing sound.
...
This being said, I don't mean to draw a line across these two
distinctions necessarily to say "this" is okay but "this" is not. However, I
do believe we should make these considerations when making the tough call of
responding appropriately to these kinds of jokes. More importantly, I find
it important that my friends know my choice to be vegan is a rights issue,
not a diet. In fact, sometimes I just say that single sentence and they can
make the distinctions for themselves.
