Welterweight Jake Shields Fights for Animals

Jake Shields, already a champion for animals, is now eyeing a different sort of championship.

In what will be one of the most-watched sporting events of the year, Shields will have the opportunity to unseat current welterweight title holder Georges St. Pierre at the Ultimate Fighting Championship 129 in Toronto on April 30.
Shields is a professional fighter in mixed martial arts—literally a mixture of elements of boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and other disciplines. He hasn't lost a fight in seven years and is ranked one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in world.

Mixing martial arts with animal protection

When he's not fighting in the ring, this life-long vegetarian fights to protect animals. Shields supported California's Proposition 2 to give farm animals enough room to turn around, and he has joined other elite fighters speaking out against dogfighting.
